Apple iPod/iPad as an audio brand
There’s no doubt that Apple and it’s advertising gurus at TBWA Chiat Day have created a lasting sonic impression by choosing songs of a certain sound palette, rhythm and feel in their last few years of advertising iTunes and iPod.
Their sonic / audio branding brief probably reads something like this:
- Unknown as of yet thereby fresh
- Quirky yet familiar and not too strange
- Simple – no fancy harmonies or chord progressions
- Singable or hummable – sticks in your ear
- Unexpected instrument palette – notice the banjo in Feist’s 1234 or the toy piano in Miss Li’s Bourgeois Shangri-La.
- Acoustic organic sounding elements blended with electronic
- Rhythmic and bouncy
- Warm and intimate
- Positive
- Shiny and bright
- Usually in a major key
- Vocals can be male or female or instrumental
- Genre – electronic, pop, acoustic, alternative – most probably not jazz or classical

There's something about this track that sounds like Beck went to France and got hooked in with Mirwais.
Composer: Mike Stidolph
Bouncy jazzy acoustic folk piece. Starts as a solo guitar and then builds into a bigger piece. Feels like I'm in a little cafe somewhere in the midwest US or even in the countryside of Europe. Gorgeous! A glass of Cabernet for me s'il vous plait.
Instrumental version of track by the same name. Acoustic guitars synths and horns the song feels like an advertising jingle for a bright shiny new...retro futuro product. This should be in an iTunes spot.

A silent film type solo piano score - comical zany funny lively and just wonderful. Try juxtaposing this against a picture of great seriousness and the results will be hilarious. Or stay congruent with the humor and underscore the black and white film of your dreams.
