Minimalism is a style of music that is…well, minimal. It eschews all the fancy flourishes of baroque. Like the visual movement of the same name, it relies on clean lines, sparseness, space and simple harmonies. Think of the music as an ethereal version of the architecture by modern architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank Gehry and Renzo Piano.
The biggest names in what is considered minimalist are composers like Phillip Glass, Steve Reich and Terry Riley. But nowadays, so many artists and composers have been influenced outside of classical music including Brian Eno, U2, Yann Tiersen, Thomas Newman and perhaps you can even draw a line to hip hop and rock acts that have stripped down their sounds.
